Entrusting the care of your precious elderly family members to someone else is a difficult decision emotionally as well as physically. The person providing home care must have top-level professional experience and human qualities.
Basic Criteria in Choosing a Caregiver
- Health Knowledge: It is critical that they have knowledge about old age diseases (Dementia, Alzheimer's, Blood Pressure) and can provide first aid in emergencies.
- Reference Check: Be sure to interview their previous employers. Learn why the caregiver left their job and their approach to the patient.
- Physical Adequacy: The caregiver must have adequate physical strength for the transfer of bedridden or semi-dependent patients (e.g., bed to wheelchair).
Harmony and Compassion
Beyond all technical skills, elderly care requires immense patience and conscience. During the interview, pay attention to the candidate's body language, tone of voice, and how they address your elderly relative. Setting a trial period to observe their harmony in the house is always the healthiest way.
